It all started at a 5,000 watt radio station in Terrace, BC. No, seriously! My first job in radio was with a private radio station in Terrace in 1983. Since then I've been a journalist in print, radio, television and the internet, all over Canada. In 1997 I started to specialize in covering the food and travel scene in Canada and abroad. One of the people who inspired me is James Barber, Canada's Urban Peasant, who passed away late in 2007. The second cookbook I ever owned was one of his and I used to take notes from his TV show. For the last part of his life we were neighbours and I was honoured to work with him and share a dinner table on many occasions.
My food and travel journalism has been seen and heard on:
- CBC Radio and Television
- The Food Network
- National Public Radio in the U.S.
- The Globe and Mail
- The National Post
- BC Business Magazine
- Northwest Palate
- enRoute Magazine
- and Western Living, among others
I also teach courses in freelance travel writing at the University of British Columbia and a course in Food Culture at the University of Victoria. (see my classes)
I hold a bachelor degree in environmental studies from the University of Waterloo, a certicate in Radio Broadcasting from Humber College, and in 2007 I completed a Masters degree in Food Culture at the University of Gastronomic Sciences near Parma, Italy.
